Why? By Terrance Smith · Published 2012-09-01 Other Sports September 14, 2012 Just when the world of sports thinks they are about their deserved matchup of Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, they are wrong yet again. The list of opponents for Pacquiao was released after the confused ending in the Bradley fight. The list left off a certain significant, aforementioned name in Mr. Mayweather. Fortunately for the world of boxing, Manny’s camp pushed the fight date back. This seemingly gave them time to set up a potential fight with Floyd. However, the stance never changed and it was apparent what was about to happen. Finally, it was announced that there would indeed be a 4th fight between the two. My immediate reaction was one of serious questioning. I was not overly ecstatic about the 3rd fight because of the damage it could possibly do to the chances of a Pacquiao/Mayweather bout, but a 4th? Lets look at the risks! Lets say Marquez finally wins (which is very possible), then what? What we will probably get is both fighters retiring. One, riding off in the sunset to his own glory. The other, an overworked pop culture sensation who has grown tired of his main craft. Lets say Manny wins (which is also possible), then what? There will probably be your typical complaining about the refs since it seems these two warriors are almost incapable of knocking each other out. Marquez retires and Manny plays “Tom and Jerry” with Floyd while Mayweather takes another fight. The only way for this fight to build any momentum to the “superfight” we all hope for is if Manny dominates Marquez from the get go and finish him early. Given the way Marquez has studied Manny and seemingly knows his every move, I don’t really see that happening very soon. Basically, this 4th fight is pretty close to a waste of a boxing fan’s time. Would I pay money to see this? Absolutely, positively, not! I’m sure this will be a good fight and will have its “oooooh” “awwww” moments but it has no significance. They’re basically fighting just to give Marquez another chance at beating Pacquiao. Isn’t three times enough? Then again, maybe he is a Buffalo Bills’ fan.
