Where are They Now? Greg Oden

Where are They Now? Greg Oden

Is it too early (and mean spirited) in Greg Oden’s career to do a “Where are they now?” on the Portland Trail Blazers bigman?

Probably. But watching Thursday night’s debacle between the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland – which saw the Trail Blazers blow an 18-point lead to lose their fourth straight at home – got me thinking … Where is Oden?

Greg hasn’t been blogging for a couple years. Odenized.com is no longer. And I didn’t see the big man on the bench Thursday, so...

Jaws Pulled From MNF Coverage

Jaws Pulled From MNF Coverage

There’s something fishy about one of ESPN’s top headlines tonight: “Tirico, Gruden duo to call MNF games in 2012.” And that fishiness revolves around an NFL analyst nicknamed “Jaws,” who’s name was mysteriously missing from the above headline — which should have read, “Jaws dropped from MNF team.” That’s right NFL fans, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski has been knocked out of the ESPN booth on Monday Night Football in 2012. Instead, it’ll only be Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden in the booth,...

Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn Undergoes Surgery

Hall of Fame baseball player Tony Gwynn underwent 14 hours of surgery Tuesday to remove a malignant tumor from his cheek. According to various reports out of San Diego, Gwynn had a malignant tumor from the inside of his mouth removed as part of a complex nerve-graft procedure. He came out of surgery around 1 a.m. this morning and has already been speaking to family members, doctors and media. There is no timetable on when he plans to return to broadcast booth or San...

Moss, Not Favre, Calling it a Comeback

Moss, Not Favre, Calling it a Comeback

Good news: It’s been one year since Brett Favre officially filed his retirement papers with the NFL, and he’s still retired and doesn’t appear interested in another comeback.

Bad news: His former Vikings teammate Randy Moss is already over retirement and plotting his return in 2012.

That’s right, the Pro Bowl and likely Hall of Fame wide receiver is ready to return to pro football, according to his video chat on UStream on Monday, also his 35th birthday.

“I wanna play football,” Moss said. “Your boy is...

Tiger vs. Lefty: That’s what Golf Needs

Tiger vs. Lefty: That’s what Golf Needs

When Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open last summer, I thought it was exactly what his sport needed. I was wrong. McIlroy has done little since his U.S. Open victory, and it became clear this weekend what golf really needs: Tiger vs. Lefty. It was uncertain if Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson would regain their form – and rivalry – of yesteryear, but this weekend’s Pebble Beach National Pro-Am showed the rivals are back where they belong … toward the top of the leaderboard...

SNL Clowns Clint Eastwood-Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial

SNL Clowns Clint Eastwood-Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial

The great part about watching the Super Bowl at the Las Vegas Hilton’s LVH Theater was that you got to see the reaction of thousands of die-hard football fans to not only the game but the halftime show and commercials. It was interesting to get the pulse of thousands during the game rather than just a dozen or so like-minded friends and family at the house. To my surprise (maybe it’s the cynical sportswriter in me), one of the most popular commercials among the LVH...

An Apology to Terrell Owens

An Apology to Terrell Owens

One thing that irks me about public figures, whether they're athletes or politicians, is when they blame the media for their downfall.

Newt Gingrich, for example, blaming the media for his marital infidelities during last month's Republican presidential debate.

And it appears Terrell Owens likes him some Republican primaries, because the former Pro Bowl receiver is playing the same card now that he's unable to work his way back into the NFL.

When will the NCAA’s Bubble Burst?

When will the NCAA’s Bubble Burst?

With the NFL season coming to a close, I’ve been watching a lot of college basketball of late, eager for March Madness to tip off. For a refresher course on the state of Division I athletics, I watched author Charles Clotfelter’s presentation on “Big-Time Sports in American Universities” (C-Span Book TV) and was caught off guard by one of his stats about the NCAA’s 120  Division I-A athletic departments (those DI universities that play I-A/FBS football rather than I-AA/FCS). According to Clotfelter, who cited...

Lakers Left Wondering What Could Have Been with Lin

Lakers Left Wondering What Could Have Been with Lin

It seems like every couple weeks, I see the Los Angeles Lakers go up against a team that embarrasses them at the point guard spot. Usually it’s the Boston Celtics and Rajon Rondo, or the Oklahoma City Thunder and Russell Westbrook. And every time I see Derek Fisher (0 for 7 against the Celtics on Thursday), Steve Blake and Co. get their ankles broke, I shake my head and think to myself, “Man, they could’ve had this guy.” Enter: Jeremy Lin. An undrafted free...

Griffin’s Dunk the Best Ever? Mullin Thinks so

Griffin’s Dunk the Best Ever? Mullin Thinks so

NBA Hall of Famer Chris Mullin has seen some amazing dunkers in his day. Michael Jordan. Clyde Drexler. Dominique Wilkins. But Blake Griffin is the ultimate slam dunk champion in his eyes. During Friday’s broadcast of the Utah Jazz-Oklahoma City Thunder game, Mullin claimed that Blake Griffin’s dunk over Kendrick Perkins was the best he’d seen in his time watching NBA basketball. “That was the greatest dunk ever,” the ESPN analyst said. “I had three good dunks in my career. I know a good...
