Dallas Cowboys’ Rob Ryan doesn’t back up talk, but he shouldn’t stop talking smack

In case you didn’t know, the Dallas Cowboys lost horribly to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night. Not only did the Dallas Cowboys’ offense never pick up any sort of rhythm, but their defense was lethargic and seemingly non-existent — the Eagles hung 34 to the Cowboys’ seven. The affair was gruesome.

This would normally be a non-story, had it not been for Rob Ryan’s comments about the Eagles being the “All Hype Team” back in August. When you talk that much trash, you better be prepared to back it up, and Ryan’s defense — which, if we’re honest, has been a hell of better than the Cowboys’ defense last year — never held a candle to the explosive corps of Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

Of course, no one’s more embarrassed than Rob Ryan. In the most classy way that is possible for a member of the jolly Ryan family, Rob took the beating in stride. In fact, he decided to assess the blame to himself (and rightfully so). Here’s the quote from the post-game interview:

The whole thing is I got outcoached by [Andy] Reid and their staff,” Ryan said. “I mean, it’s ridiculous. I never gave our guys a chance. The whole [expletive] thing was on me. If I gave them any extra motivation, hell, I certainly never backed it up. I gave our guys a lousy plan. We had no chance, and it’s all on me.

You can also check out the video of Rob Ryan’s interview here, but then we have to question why you’re so anxious to see Rob Ryan’s face.

Still, he’s absolutely right — from the beginning, the Dallas Cowboys’ defense was nowhere near prepared for this game. Michael Vick ran wherever he damn well pleased, taking advantage of a highly-scattered and very confused Dallas defense. LeSean McCoy had a field day (as he usually does); his shiftiness made Cowboys’ defenders miss and the tackling was borderline atrocious on Dallas’ end.

Of course, we can proceed to tell you guys that it’s best for Rob Ryan to keep his mouth shut next time, but that’s stupid — we’re firm believers in trash talk, and we’re even bigger believers in trash talk when it comes to the Ryan family, since brother Rex tends to do better when he’s shootin’ the bull, as opposed to when he’s not.

Honestly, there’s a sense of added motivation when you’re talking smack. No one wants to be the guy that was jawin’ all season long only to look horrifically stupid against the team you were targeting in your attacks. It forces you to gameplan harder not just to be the best in your profession, but also to not be the guy who has to be told to shut up from within his organization. If Ryan’s defense has a hell of an outing today, do you think Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett are asking him to lay off the smack? Hell no. But now, he’ll be stuck with “Seriously, why can’t you just shut up?” for a good long while now.

Yeah, we know: “If you can’t get motivated enough to get your team to play at a high level in the National Football League, what the hell are you doing as a coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys?” That’s a cliche argument, but because we love cliches, we’ll accept this as a valid point; however, there’s no “cap” on how much motivation you have. If Rob Ryan is the most dedicated defensive coordinator in the NFL, it’s possible that he could’ve reached a higher level if he forced himself to gameplan harder just so he doesn’t have to hear it from father Buddy and brother Rex. There’s always something you can do to motivate yourself further (believe me on this — I’m a psychology major), and if talking trash can get you out of bed earlier in the morning? So be it.

So we can only help Rob Ryan puts a little more mustard on his burns next time he gets the chance. We love you, Rob. Don’t you dare change.
