The Selfishness of DeSean Jackson

What does every professional athlete dream of, winning a championship or a big contract?

Well, DeSean Jackson answered that when in an interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters, Jackson stated that he didn’t put all of his effort in playing last year in fear of getting injured, which would have put his contract extension into jeopardy. Philadelphia Eagles fans should be disgusted by Jackson’s comment. His full comment can be seen here.

To say DeSean Jackson was dogging it is an understatement, he had career lows and most of the time looked liked he didn’t want to play, there are some athletes that try their whole career to try and win a championship.

Most athletes are out there to play the game to win and yes, they have to make big money too but not to give 100 percent is a cardinal sin in any professional sport. Jackson is the definition of selfish and we now know why he was benched and deactivated by Andy Reid last season.

The Eagles were a great disappointment as a team last season as they failed to live up to the “Dream Team” hype that followed them through most last season, with an average 8-8 record

Talent alone does not win championships, it helps but in order to win, a team must be committed to win and if they aren’t committed to win then they don’t stand a chance.

To put it in perceptive, the Eagles would have won the NFC East if they had simply won one more game because they owned all the tie-breakers, which means they would have taken the place of the eventual Super Bowl Champion New York Giants in the playoffs, where anything can happen.

Even though it looked like most of the Eagles players were just going through motions for the first three quarters of the season, it is another thing to come out and say weren’t giving your all in order to prevent a possible injury in order for a big payday in the future, like Jackson said on Monday.

The Eagles blew seven fourth quarter leads, tied for most with their arch-rival, the Dallas Cowboys. So mental toughness is a question the Eagles will have to answer all season from management, the fans and the media.

Eagles’ fans should take comfort in Jackson stating that he will be giving 100 percent out there this year.
